Alhaji Aliko Dangote is a business magnate, investor,philanthropist, global business owner and enthusiast. He is the founder and president of the mega-successful conglomerate, Dangote Group.He was born on the 10th of April,1957 in Kano, Nigeria to a wealthy and respected muslim family( Mohammed Dangote and Mariya Sanusi Dantata). He is the great-grandson of Alhaji Alhassan Dantata, who was one of the richest West Africans as at 1955.
Dangote received his primary education at Sheikh Ali Kumasi Madrasa and his secondary education at the Capital High School, Kano. For his tertiary education, he attended the Al-Azhar University, Cairo,Egypt, where he bagged a Bsc degree in Business studies and Administration. He went further to obtain his doctorate degrees from Coventry University and the University of Ibadan, Oyo.
Alhaji Aliko Dangote established the Dangote Group in 1977 as a small trading firm which has grown into a successful conglomerate business that deals with cement manufacturing, food processing and freight. Its subsidiaries include Dangote Cement, Dangote Flour, Dangote Sugar Refinery and many others. Dangote Cement is the star of the conglomerate as it makes most of the revenue. According to Forbes,it produces a rough estimate of about 45.6 million metric tons of cement every year and it carries out operations in about 10 countries. It is recognized as the largest listed company in West Africa and the first Nigerian company to join the Forbes Global 2000 Companies list.
The Dangote Group is also popularly known in the sugar market as it dominates the market with its sugar refinery being the major supplier to 70% of the market. This company has presence in 17 African countries and it has provided employment to over 11 thousand people, and it is regarded as the biggest industrial conglomerate in the western part of Africa and a market leader in cement on the continent.
Alhaji Aliko Dangote is a member of several international institutions and bodies such as Steering Committee of the United Nations Secretary-General's Global Education First Initiative, the McKinsey Advisory Council and the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum. He also chairs the board of the Corporate Council on Africa. In 2016, he was named as the Co-chair of the US-Africa Business Center, by the US Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Clinton Health Access Initiative, he joined in April, 2017.
Alhaji Aliko Dangote has received quite a number of honorable recognitions and awards.He was honored in 2009 as the largest provider of employment in the whole of Nigerian construction industry. He was awarded as the Nigeria's second-highest honor, the Grand Commander of the Niger (GCON) Order, by the former president, Goodluck Jonathan. He was honored in 2014 as the "Africa Person of the year " by Forbes and was also listed as the "Most Powerful Man in Africa" from 2013-2018. He was listed on CNBC's "Top 25 Businessmen in the World" in 2014. He was listed amongst the "100 Most Influential People in the World" in 2014 published by Time Magazine.In 2015, he was also listed among "50 Most Influential Individuals in the World" by Bloomberg Market. He was listed as one of the "Top 100 most influential Africans" by New African magazine in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019. He won "The Guardian Man of the Year 2015"and the "2016 African Business Leader Award".
Aliko Dangote, has emerged as the 67th richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $20.7 billion, and he is regarded as Africa’s richest man.
